Description
Flexible Fiberglass Weld Backing for Sheet, Plate and Pipe
Aquasol Fiback is a flexible fiberglass weld-backing tape for TIG, MIG and SMAW applications where conventional backside purging is impractical, costly or not part of the approved welding method. Its outer adhesive sections secure the tape while a fiberglass center strip supports the reverse side of the weld.
It is designed for sheet, plate, pipe, tanks, pressure-vessel work and long seams where a consistent reverse-side bead and reduced post-weld cleanup are important. Request a quote for USA or Canada delivery and help matching the backing tape to the application.
Why Choose Fiback?
- Flexible construction: woven fiberglass and malleable aluminum adapt to curved, uneven and complex surfaces.
- Reverse-side support: the fiberglass center supports the weld pool from the back side of the joint.
- Process compatibility: suitable for TIG, MIG and SMAW welding when validated by the project procedure.
- Temperature ratings: adhesive is rated to 500°F (260°C), aluminum foil to 1100°F (593°C), and the fiberglass strip to 1022°F (550°C).
- Specified components: halogen- and chlorofluorocarbon-free.
Standard Fiback Sizes
| Item No. | Duty Rating | Overall Width | Fiberglass Center | Roll Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFBT-2.5-200 | 200 AMP | 2.5 in. / 64 mm | 1.125 in. / 28.5 mm | 82 ft. / 25 m |
| AFBT-4.0-200 | 200 AMP | 4 in. / 102 mm | 1.5 in. / 38 mm | 82 ft. / 25 m |
| AFBT-2.5 | 600 AMP | 2.5 in. / 64 mm | 1.125 in. / 28.5 mm | 41 ft. / 12.5 m |
| AFBT-4.0 | 600 AMP | 4 in. / 102 mm | 1.5 in. / 38 mm | 41 ft. / 12.5 m |
200 AMP or 600 AMP?
- Choose 200 AMP for lighter-duty work and thinner materials. It is often suited to general fabrication applications.
- Choose 600 AMP for heavier-duty work, denser materials, or automated and orbital-welding applications where the higher duty rating is appropriate.
- Select the roll width so the fiberglass center fully supports the planned joint geometry. Confirm the final choice against the welding procedure.
Simple Installation Guide
- Align the base materials with the required root gap and place the fiberglass strip across the backside of the joint.
- Form the fiberglass center into the required convex support shape away from the weld area, following the project procedure.
- Peel the release liner progressively and press both adhesive edges onto clean base metal along the joint.
- Re-press the outer edges to make a continuous seal, then complete welding and inspection to the approved procedure.
Storage and Handling
For best performance, store Fiback below 77°F (25°C) and below 65% relative humidity. Keep the adhesive edges free of debris during application. Test compatibility and removal on a representative coupon whenever the project procedure, base metal or operating conditions warrant it.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I use Fiback instead of back purging?
Fiback is a backing option for suitable joints where conventional backside purging is impractical or costly. The welding procedure should determine whether it is appropriate for the material, joint and quality requirements.
How do I choose between 200 AMP and 600 AMP?
Use 200 AMP for lighter-duty and thinner-material applications. Use 600 AMP for heavier-duty work or suitable automated and orbital-welding applications.
What temperature ratings apply to Fiback?
The adhesive is rated to 500°F (260°C), the aluminum foil to 1100°F (593°C), and the fiberglass center strip to 1022°F (550°C).
How should Fiback be stored?
Store it below 77°F (25°C) and below 65% relative humidity for best performance.
